ABOUT US:
Safe Place for Youth (SPY) is the leading service provider for youth experiencing or at-risk of homelessness in West Los Angeles. Founded in 2011, our agency offers trauma-informed, low barrier programs that support young people in exiting the streets and achieving stability so that they can thrive, not just survive. Our robust continuum of care includes street outreach, drop-in services, health and wellness programming, case management, education and employment services, and housing programs.
SPY is a unique social impact agency that is committed to overcoming structural barriers to equity, community collaboration, and innovative youth-focused programming. If you have the skills, passion and collaborative spirit, join our growing team of over 100 employees.
SPY strives to attract and develop individuals who reflect a broad spectrum of diversity, including (but by no means limited to) racial, ethnic, gender identity and socioeconomic dimensions. We believe that inclusion of diverse perspectives is essential to achieving long-term, systemic change. We explicitly seek applications from those who self-identify as coming from historically marginalized populations to enrich and elevate our equity-centered approach to problem-solving.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
SPY’s Development & Communications Department is responsible for all fundraising & communications activities, including donor relations, corporate relations, in-kind donations, Raiser’s Edge NXT database upkeep, fundraising appeals, special events, volunteerism, advocacy, social enterprise, marketing, social media, branding and other community-building initiatives. The Development Intern supports administrative aspects of these critical development activities.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for SPY’s work and be comfortable and productive in a fast-paced (and fun!) environment. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to explore the nonprofit sector and be a part of an innovative, growing organization.

Safe Place for Youth was founded in 2011 by a group of dedicated volunteers and Founder/Executive Director Alison Hurst, offering hot food, clothing, and socks to homeless youth in Venice Beach from their cars. Since those humble beginnings, we've been driven to give youth opportunities to transform by multiplying our services, building our programming, and strengthening our partnerships. With incredible support from Board Members, donors, volunteers, and partner organizations, SPY has grown from a 100% volunteer-led organization to a professional staff of approximately 60 employees, whose ski ...
ll sets have strengthened our programs. In April 2015, we moved into our own building in Venice, giving us the opportunity to expand programs, address youth needs, and partner with local specialty service providers. The timing of our expansion is significant. In Los Angeles, there is a real urgency in addressing the issues of homelessness and SPY stays centrally involved in the discussions impacting policy change. The reality is that the numbers of homeless youth have increased to epidemic proportions, which means we must respond to the crisis by continuing to grow our programs and maintaining our leadership role with coalition groups working to end youth homelessness. Our mission is to empower young people experiencing homelessness to thrive by providing lasting, community-driven solutions that address racial and social inequity. Federal Tax ID: 84-1802637
